After being ejected from the New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary School (NAMS), troubled teenager Charles Henry is back in school. He is now attending the Berbice Educational Institute, where he was admitted on Tuesday last.
His expulsion had resulted in a standoff between the Region Six Department of Education, which had refused to readmit him into the school system, although the Probation and Social Services Department had recommended that he be readmitted.
The story of 16-year-old Charles Henry came to light after he was issued with an open transfer by the Headmistress of NAMS on January 25, 2011 more than one year ago, although it was not requested by his mother. This resulted in him being out of school while the matter engaged the Regional Education Department. At that time, Henry was a Fourth Form Agricultural Science student.
While at home,Henry found himself on the wrong side of the law and landed before the courts.
A Probation report was ordered and it highlighted that the Education System had failed the teenager, resulting in his involvement in unsavoury activities and his eventual incarceration.
The court, after listening to the report, dismissed the matter and placed the lad under a one-year probation and supervision.
The report critically stated that the youth was let down by the education system because he was evicted from the New Amsterdam Multilateral School by the Headmistress, who subsequently issued an open transfer to the lad although it was not requested by his mother. This practice is against the policy of the Ministry of Education.
The mother had stated that she was told by the Headmistress, “Let your son go to the Boy School.”
She went to the Department of Education and was given a royal run-around. She was eventually told by Regional Educational Officer Ms Shafiran Bhajan, that “as far as I am concerned the matter is finish” and her son cannot return to the school system. “I should take him to a private school”
Despite the critical Probation Report that was presented in the Magistrate’s Court and a request by the Probation Department for the child to return to a senior Secondary school, the Regional Education Department had turned its back on the matter.
Newly elected Regional Chairman of Region six, David Armagon, also intervened in the matter after being apprised by Attorney at law Charrandass Persaud, who was looking into the child’s interest.
His initial intervention was met with resistance by the Education Department. However after constant probing by the Probation and Social Services Department, the child was eventually admitted to the Berbice Educational Institute.
