Hassar curry poisoning…
The condition of one of the five Mahaica poison victims took a turn for the worse yesterday morning, sending family members into shock.
Sukdeo Dharamdat, 48, has joined his son, Chaitram, 17 in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
The man was previously in the high dependency unit up to Saturday but his condition turned from worrying to critical, forcing doctors to place him on life support.
Dharamdat’s wife, Nandranie Sukdeo, 38, and his two daughters, Hemwanttie, 16, and Muneshwari, 13, remained in a stable condition in the Female Surgical Ward.
His 14-year-old daughter who confessed Saturday to the Police at the Cove and John Police Station that she had laced the pot of hassar curry with a potentially deadly dose of Monocrotophos, is reportedly “shedding bitter tears” at the station.
The family, except the confessed suspect, all ate the poison laced food on Thursday last.
While the mother and her two daughters are almost out of danger, the father and son will be lucky to survive the deadly insecticide.
Monocrotophos is a highly toxic insecticide that is fatal to both insects and humans, and is banned in several countries.
Doctors at the Georgetown hospital have confirmed that the insecticide was found in the victims’ blood.
Yesterday a police source told this publication that the 14-year-old teenager who is in custody revealed that she poisoned her family out of anger.
The teen’s brother, Eshwardat, who was not at home when his family ate the hassar curry, told Kaieteur News that he strongly believes that his sister’s 19-year-old boyfriend had instigated her.
However, the teen’s boyfriend, who works as an Accountant at the Guyana Rice Board was yesterday arrested and later released after giving a statement that he had ended his relationship with the teen since he found she had ‘multiple’ partners.
Up to press time, police were still questioning the teen who was crying throughout the entire ordeal.
