Taffin Khan defies loss to clinch Trophy Stall chess championship

senior national champion Taffin Khan when action in the Trophy Stall Open Chess Tournament concluded at the Keishar’s Sports Club, Hadfield Street, Georgetown, over the past weekend. However, the loss did not change the dynamics and Khan went on to chalk up yet another tournament win in the senior category.
Glenford Corlette of Lodge, Georgetown put on a solid performance and finished in the second place while Cuban national, Maria Thomas closed off the podium spots.
In a battle of wits, Neto prevailed when he forced Khan to launch an invasion with the queen, the most powerful piece. Neto defended cautiously, cutting off the queen’s retreat whereupon Khan lost the piece and subsequently conceded defeat.
Cecil Cox, student of Queen’s College, won in the juniors’ category, while Neto of Diamond Secondary School finished in the second place. Saeed Ali of Richard Ishmael Secondary secured the third place, while 12 year old Sheriffa Ali of St. Joseph’s High School ended in the fourth place. Dravin Drickpau of West Demerara Secondary School ended fifth among the junior players, while Trenton Bennett was awarded the trophy for being the best newcomer.
The point standings at the end of the seven round tournament read: SENIORS Taffin Khan (6), Glenford Corlette (5) and Maria Thomas (4½) . JUNIORS: Cecil Cox (5); Roberto Neto (4½); Saeed Ali, Sheriffa Ali and Dravin Drickpaul (4 apiece) and Trenton Bennett (3). Twelve juniors and five senior chess players participated in the annual competition.
