A Corriverton, Berbice woman is in a critical condition at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital after she was brutally stabbed in the throat and head by a bandit around 15:30hrs on Tuesday in a store just a stone’s throw from the Springlands Police Station.
According to reports, the woman, Jaiwantee Sharma, also known as ‘Besky, 49, an employee of Wazir’s Rice Depot of Lot ‘M’ Springlands, was at work when a man entered the store and demanded cash.
The woman was alone in the store at the time.

Dilchand said that the man closed the door and suddenly pounced on Sharma.
“He choke the lady and rob she and slashed she throat, either with a knife or a razor; two or three slashes on the head,” the businessman said.
“The other people that rented the building, tried to open the door and as soon as they did he (the bandit) dashed away by the Seaside (Corentyne River),” Dilchand told this newspaper.
When asked if the bandit carted off any money, he noted that, “For today, we didn’t do any kind of business, but he carried way the keys for the [money] drawer and he carried away some cash [from her], I don’t know how much, some ID cards and bank [deposit] books.”
“The police tried to run after the guy and he escaped. But some more information came in stating that he might be staying at the Amerindian Hostel at Springlands,” Dilchand stated.
Vidya Sharma, the woman’s daughter, speaking from their Crabwood Creek residence, said that her mother’s condition is critical but stable at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
“She can talk but she cannot eat”, she remarked.
“She lost a lot of blood and (is) complaining that her head is swinging a lot. She’s not feeling well right now. She has pains…vomiting and stuff, like that. The doctors said that she will be fine but they will be observing her over the next few hours after which they will be making a decision on what to do next.”
