Members of the “Rescue UG” committee yesterday met with Pro Chancellor
Prem Misir to discuss several pressing issues at the country’s leading tertiary institution.
University of Guyana Student Society President Duane Edwards, told Kaieteur News last night that this was the first time that they have met with someone from UG administration, since protest action started last week on the scheduled resumption of classes for 2012.
He explained that the committee members did not go into the meeting expecting any commitments.
He said that they have asked to meet with a broader representation of the University Council so that they can better deal with matters at hand. Kaieteur News was told that Dr. Misir’s main position was on the physical aspect of the University to which he gave his reassurances.
Edwards said that although the physical matters are important, they need a more comprehensive assessment of the issues so that they can be dealt with in a more profound manner. “We don’t need patch work,” Edwards told Kaieteur News.
Meanwhile in an invited comment, former lecturer Freddie Kissoon said that the issue was not about the four lecturers whose contracts were terminated. Kissoon said that the issue was about the Council of the University and the authority that it has instituted to itself.
He said that the same authority should reside in the academic community.
He noted that unless the issue is discussed in a comprehensive way by the Council and “Operation Rescue UG”, there would be no way there would be meaningful change at UG.
The decision of the academic community to employ lecturers to fill pressing needs should not be negotiated with the council, Kissoon argued.
Meanwhile, repair works commenced yesterday on the George Walcott Lecture Theater.
Last week there were several calls by the committee for the roof and other issues in that particular classroom to be addressed.
