The cream of the country’s amateur boxers will take to the ring tomorrow afternoon at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, when the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) stages a special tournament that allows selectors to assess the progress of those pugilists preparing for international assignments over the coming year.
Tournament Director, Terrence Poole intimated that GABA administrators have decided to host the tournament so as to evaluate the progress of those fighters shortlisted for impending international engagements. He said that this ploy will ensure that those boxers participating in those tournaments comprise the best available. Activities will culminate on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Imran ‘Magic’ Khan, identified to represent Guyana at the 2012 London Olympics, has recovered sufficiently from a recent injury incurred during an out of ring fracas and will participate in the tournament. Several other fighters shortlisted for the above tournament will also be in action including Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym (PRBG) representative, Richard Williamson among others.
Further, Mr. Poole intimated that several overseas based Guyanese pugilists will also be in action. United States of America based boxer, Lawrence Singh has recently lost to Khan in a specially arranged tournament in Trinidad and Tobago. He will arrive in Guyana today and is expected to be in action tomorrow night. However, a return clash with Khan has been ruled out since Singh will be competing in a lighter weight category. Several other overseas based boxers are also expected to fly in for the tournament.
Additionally, local boxers in all of the categories will be showcasing their talent in the hope of impressing the selectors. Boxers are asked to assemble at the National Gymnasium for the weigh this morning while the action gets underway tomorrow evening at 18:00hrs sharp. Patrons are asked to support the event.
