Coming on board with the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) to assist with their 2012
planned calendar of activities for the development of the sport (cricket) and also to keep the games playing in Guyana was Ansa McAl Group of Companies.
Ansa McAl will be sponsoring the 20/20 Tournament for the BCB First Division Teams which is slated for mid March. The tournament will be played around Berbice with the teams being divided into two zones with the finals playing either at Blairmont or Skeldon Ground.
Speaking on behalf of the BCB Hilbert Foster, said that confusion is the only word now closely connected to the game in Guyana as it slides from one disaster to another.
“The word confusion only close connection to the game of cricket is that both of them starts with the word ‘C’, but sadly in Guyana both words have become brothers as our cricket slides from one disaster to another. The only shining light of hope at the moment for our national game is the Berbice Cricket Board and its activities.”
Foster added that BCB completed a highly successful 2011 year after hosting 12 cricket tournaments at all age groups and levels and surpassed the off-field target of 75 activities.
He noted that while the rest of the cricketing bodies are busy fighting for power and status, BCB has been busy preparing for the busiest year in their history, “2012 would be the year where success would be everywhere for the Berbice Cricket Board with the hosting of 17 cricket tournaments with the Berbice Cricket Board assured of at least 14 sponsorship”, he said.
The BCB cricket tournaments are as follow: (1) U-13 Inter-club and Inter-zone competition, (2) U-15 Inter- club and Inter-zone competition, (3) U-17 Inter- club and Inter-zone competition, (4) U-19 Inter- club and Inter-zone competition, (5) U-21 Inter-club competition, (6) Female Inter-zone competition, (7) Second Division Inter-club competition and Intermediate, (8) First Division two 50-overs tournaments, two 20/20 tournaments and a possibly two day First Division Tournament.
He went on by saying that a target of 80 off the field cricket projects were set, which includes the Awards Ceremony, a comprehensive all year coaching programme, cricket academy and a tribute to heroes.
A total of 116 U-15 players were a part of a coaching session which was held last year.
Foster also added that Ansa McAl Group of Companies would be donating trophies for their Annual Awards Ceremony, hampers for second Annual Tribute to Groundsmen Programme and also would be lending a helping hand in constructing a large Billboard which includes photographs of 15 Berbicians who played cricket at the highest level in Port Mourant; the place where most Guyanese Test cricketers originated.
In closing, the BCB expressed their gratitude to Ansa McAl Group of Companies and also to Ms. Beverley Harper and Mr. Troy Cadogan for their assistance in making the sponsorship possible.
Representative of Ansa McAl Group of Companies, Nigel Worrell congratulated BCB for taking such a big step in promoting Berbice Cricket and said that the Company is always interested in supporting development in their people in any area.
