Approximately 20 persons are homeless after a fire of unknown origin
gutted a nine-apartment building at Hill Top, Second Street Timehri last evening.
The fire that destroyed the wooden building that housed 10 families is a short distance from the Guyana Defence Force’s Base Camp Stephenson. Reports reveal the fire erupted after 20:00 hrs, leaving millions in losses.
Two dogs that were tied to the building perished.
According to reports the area had a power outage so residents ruled out that the fire might have been electrical in origin. However, it is believed the fire started at the centre of the ‘range’ building.
Fire officials and police speculate that the blaze might have been caused by lighted candles. There were no injuries.
Amongst the homeless are a teacher, Air Traffic Control and Roraima Airways staff. A minibus that was parked near the building was also damaged.
Amanda Bagenought, a teacher, said that she was sleeping during a power outage when she heard her neighbour shouting.
“She said ‘Amanda you see what happening?’. I didn’t know what was going on, so I run to the back door and kicked it open, and run around in front and I saw the fire. So by then I started to scream and called out to persons to call the fire service.”
Adding that she attempted to salvage items from her apartment, she said there was nothing else to do but observe the building being engulfed in flames.
“I have to stay somewhere but I don’t know where yet,” the teacher said.
Another tenant, Nicole Stewart, who celebrated her birthday yesterday was inconsolable.
“Now this is the third place I have to go furnish after this,” she lamented.
