A family has alleged that police ranks accusing them of a minor traffic offence forced them to exit their vehicle on Regent Street and walk to the Brickdam Police Station in pouring rain.
According to Edward George, he and family members were driving along Regent Street when ranks in a police vehicle ordered that his son “pull over”.
It was around 17:30 hrs when the incident occurred. Three policemen exited their vehicle and began to address the family.
“We were told to exit the vehicle; all five of us, yet they didn’t search it. We were standing in the rain. They wanted to know if we were drinking and wanted to send us to Brickdam Station, but when they realise none of us was under the influence, they then talked about the vehicle being tinted,” said George.
Kaieteur News understands that the vehicle had four male occupants and one female. The driver was allegedly asked to produce all relevant documents which he did.
“My son produced documents and everything was fine. But they start with the tint on the vehicle. They told my son to get in the vehicle and drive to the Brickdam Station and we were told to find other means of transportation.
When I asked to go with my son the police objected. They said the only way any of us going is in the back of the pickup. All the time we were in the rain.”
The man explained that one officer told the family that they were preventing him from executing his duties if they persist in entering the car.
George further stated that his son entered the vehicle and was accompanied by one of the police ranks, who was armed with a shotgun.
The police pickup followed the car to the station while his family had to brave the heavy rain on foot.
This newspaper understands that the journey began at Camp and Regent Streets.
The family stated that upon arrival at the station their son was told by a female officer on duty to remove the tint on their car which he did. The ranks who took the young man to the police station left the compound before the rest of the family could arrive, George claimed.
“We told the police at the station that we are going to the media with this because this is not right. We had to stand in the rain and be prevented from entering our vehicle. If anything, they should have taken us all while in the car to the station and deal with the matter whatever it was.”
