DEAR EDITOR,
I was touring South America for the past couple months and Guyana was my last destination before returning to Norway.
Throughout South America there is one thing I observed to be prevalent, a mixture of people from diverse races and creed.
I was excited to know Guyana was the only English-speaking country on the continent and it was easy to maneuver around in my quest to learn about the many historic sites and interesting people.
To my extreme disappointment all my eyes were able to focus on was the many garbage piles on the streets of Georgetown. The emitting garbage that reeks throughout the city was so much it made me sick. Garbage in front of churches, restaurants, hotels and even schools!
The one place there was no garbage was the building structures situated on Main Street. I later learnt that is where the president resides. This is the only place kept clean. I’m forced to believe this is the reflection of the inner working of the government of Guyana. I have taken pictures of all the garbage heaps and made a compilation and will be filing a report when I return to my country.
I feel it necessary to highlight this dire situation plaguing this otherwise beautiful Guyana. I hope my findings will bring some relief to this special country.
Allen Cummings
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
