The woman fingered for allegedly assaulting a four-month-old baby was yesterday granted $100,000 bail after being read two charges of assault causing actual bodily harm.
Dacia Francis, a 27-year-old of William Street, Kitty, appeared before Chief Magistrate (ag) Priya Sewnarine-Beharry who also placed the woman on a bond to keep the peace, pending the determination of the matter.
It was alleged that Francis harmed Patrica Hardy and her mother Stacy Warrell, 23.
According to the police, the victim and the defendant are known to each other, but on January 8th, the two women were involved in a heated argument.
The ranks said that Francis accused Warrell of spreading rumours about her to her boyfriend who resides overseas. In return, Francis who is a mother herself became annoyed and pushed Warrell’s baby out of her hand causing her to receive injuries.
The police also claimed that after the baby fell to the ground, Francis began to punch Warrell several times to the face.
The matter was later reported to the police and efforts were made to locate the defendant.
Francis, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, was represented by Defense Attorney, Patrice Henry. The lawyer claimed that while the charge alleged that the woman assaulted the mother and daughter over “name talking,” what took place was a mere accident.
The defense attorney said he was told that the baby fell out of the mother’s arms after the women collided in a doorway. He claimed that while one woman was entering the doorway the other was exiting. The women came into contact causing the unfortunate incident.
Francis was not denied bail but conditions were instituted following the granting of her pre-trial liberty. She was told to post $50,000 bail on each charge and to appear in Court 10 on January 24.
