Dear Editor,
The Kaieteur News of January 12, 2012 published a letter written by me as Hon. Secretary of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) to the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) under the erroneous caption “GCB writes government requesting Lloyd’s appointment be rescinded.”
Despite publishing the full text of our letter your headline suggested to readers that the GCB had in fact written to the Government of Guyana and not the WICB. It further suggested that the GCB was attempting to operate outside of its mandate and jurisdiction.
We wish to make it clear that the GCB, as a member of the WICB wrote to its parent body, WICB about matters of mutual interest.
The Government of Guyana has the right to appoint anyone to any position it has vacant at any time. Equally, Mr. Clive Lloyd has the right to accept any employment he so chooses. The issue of Mr. Lloyd’s appointment is only a matter of concern for the GCB and WICB in as far as such an appointment and/or the execution of his duties of the appointment conflicts with the values and principles we have sought to uphold as administrators of cricket under the aegis of the ICC and WICB.
As a result of the error in your headline and the consequent harm that has been done to the reputation of the GCB as a result of the misrepresentation we are requesting a published correction and clarification in your next issue. I am including the text of our original letter for reference.
Finally, Mr. Editor, we wish to thank you for your efforts to publish fairly and accurately the matters relating to Guyana’s cricket and, more importantly to support and celebrate the performance of our national cricketers.
Kind regards,
Anand Sanasie
Hon. Secretary, GCB
Editor’s note: We note your concern and apologise for the misrepresentation in our previous article. KN Sports has no intention to discredit any of the parties involved. We maintain our position of giving all sides space to state that case and let the public be the judge. Again we apologise to all concerned for any harm our misrepresentation might have caused and will ensure that it does not happen in the future.
Here is the full text of the letter sent to the WICB on Lloyd by the GCB.
Dr. the Hon. Julian Hunte
President
West Indies Cricket Board.
Dr. Hunte,
Re: Mr. Clive Lloyd’s appointment to a Government IMC.
The Executive Committee of the Guyana Cricket Board has mandated me to write you making an official complaint regarding WICB non-member Director, Mr. Clive Lloyd
I am assured that the West Indies Cricket Board is well aware that Mr. Clive Lloyd has been appointed and has accepted that paid appointment by the Government of Guyana, as Chairman of an Interim Management Committee, replacing the Guyana Cricket Board. I am also aware that this was indicated to you by way of an official correspondence from the Government of Guyana and substantiated by letters to each and every executive of the Guyana Cricket Board. We are also fully aware of the efforts of our Government and Mr Lloyd towards obfuscating the purpose of this appointment in the eyes of the public claiming that the IMC is not there to take over the GCB but instead to act in an advisory position. The Government is also dishonestly claiming that they are acting pursuant to a court order ruling by the Honorable Chief Justice which is totally false.
While the Executives of the Guyana Cricket Board are aware, through their representatives on the WICB, that your Board is currently addressing this issue in totality and does not recognise the government appointed IMC, it is imperative that we reiterate our position on Mr. Clive Lloyd. Mr. Lloyd, since his appointment to the IMC, has been meeting with and creating unnecessary discord amongst our players and staff of the GCB. In fact, he has been operating as if the GCB does not exist and his committee has replaced same. This situation is totally unacceptable and has been creating an atmosphere of tension and uneasiness.
We note his derogatory comments, in various sections of the media, against the WICB and GCB.
We are cognizant of the ICC and WICB stance on political interference in cricket and urge that immediate steps be taken to ensure that Mr. Lloyd’s appointment as a WICB non-member director is immediately rescinded for bringing the WICB and the sport in general, into disrepute. Further, we humbly suggest that this position be transmitted to the ICC where Lloyd sits as the Chairman of the Cricket Committee as it clearly constitutes a direct conflict of interest that has serious ramifications on the status of the WICB.
I once again urge that this matter be addressed expeditiously.
Yours Sincerely.
Anand Sanasie
