Special Emphasis on Coaching in 2012
The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) Sunday last hosted its Annual General Meeting for 2011 at its Cheddi Jagan
Street, New Amsterdam Office. The meeting was postponed from late December due to the fact that the last Sunday in 2011 and the first Sunday in 2012 were public holidays.
A total of twenty-two delegates drawn from Kildonan, Whim, Port Mourant, Rose Hall Town, Young Warriors, Rose Hall Canje, Mount Sinai, Bermine, Chesney, Berbice River Cricket Association, Mental Hospital and West Berbice attended the AGM.
The delegates received and approved the Minutes of the Ordinary General Meeting held on August14, 2011; the Financial Report for 2011, President’s and Secretary’s Reports along with Competitions and Special Events Committees.
The Board during this year would place special emphasis on coaching at both the junior and senior levels. A four member committee consisting of Michael Hyles Franco, Julian Moore, Winston Smith and Leslie Solomon will work along with Chairman of the Special Events Committee Hilbert Foster to organise and host the following coaching clinics in 2012:
Junior Elite Training Programme, Senior Elite Training Programme, Berbice Cricket Academy, Junior Batting Clinic, Junior Captaincy Seminar, Junior Fast Bowler Clinic, Spinners Clinic, Wicket Keeping Clinic, Fielding Clinic, Coaches Seminar, Scorers Clinic, Social Etiquette and Public Speaking Seminars.
The BCB also disclosed that the following tournaments would be played this year: Under-13, 15, 17 and 19 would be played at the Inter Club and Inter Zone levels; Under-21 Inter Club; Female Inter Club; Second Division Inter Club and Intermediate while at the First Division level, players will be involved in 20/20, two 50 overs and Two-Day tournaments.
The Board’s 2012 season would be launched in early March with a special 20/20 tournament at the Blairmont Ground.
The 2011 Tenelec Inc. 50 overs, Memorex/Leslie Amsterdam Memorial Under-17 and New Building Society Second Division competitions would be played off in the meantime.
Delegates at the AGM discussed in detail the formation of the IMC (Interim Management Committee) by the Guyana Government after listening to a comprehensive report by President Keith Foster; the state of umpiring in the Ancient County; the registration of all junior cricketers for coaching purposes and the importance of the Under-21 and Under-23 tournaments.
Members also urged the Board to organise more tournaments for females, while a long discussion was held on the merit of hosting an Inter-Block tournament similar to the Guinness Greatest of the Streets football competition in an effort to renew the passion for the game.
Treasurer, Anil Beharry reported on the financial standing of the Board which he described as healthy. The Board is liquid despite the non-payment of the yearly subvention to BCB and the stipend of the Office Administrator by the Guyana Cricket Board.
At the conclusion of the AGM, members expressed satisfaction at the current state of the game in the Ancient County, while applauding the board for its continued efforts. The next Ordinary General Meeting (OGM) is set for March 25, 2012.
