Young Warriors Cricket Club (YWCC) of Cumberland is the latest team to reach the quarterfinals of the 2011 Memorex/Leslie Amsterdam Memorial Under-17 cricket competition in Berbice. They advanced after taking first innings honours from Police following a tense struggle. The result saw YWCC ending the preliminary round in an unassailable position in Zone B.
In the match which was played at Cumberland, Police won the toss and elected to bat first; they were given a solid start of 70 by Leon Andrews (52) and Shemroy McKenzie (41). Later on in the innings, Elan Schultz made 39 and Marlon Shepherd 36 to steer Police to a safe-looking first innings 234 for 6 declared. Bowling for Young Warriors, Christopher Bahadur took 2 for 49.
When Warriors began the chase, they lost an early wicket at 16 for 1 but after national Under-15 batsman, Shimron Hetmyer was joined by Berbice Under-17 batsman, Suresh Dhanai, they rescued the situation by putting 102 for the second wicket after which Hetmyer fell for 47.
They slipped to 150 for 6 but Dhanai, who was still there, held the innings together and featured a 50-run 7th wicket partnership with Christopher Bahadur; Dhanai eventually fell for 88 at 200 for 7. Bahadur (34 not out) and Richard Henry (6 not out) saw Warriors safely through to 239 for 8 at the close, taking six first innings points. Bowling for Police, Omar Weatherspoon took 2 for 8, Winston Lewis 2 for 29 and Kwesi Mickle 2 for 65.
