DEAR EDITOR,
Crime seems to be slowly declining in our country and I must say hats off to the hard work of the Guyana Police Force (GPF). However, I am very concerned about a recent scenario that took place on 16th January, 2012 at around 5pm, at the junction of Sheriff Street and the East Coast Highway.
I frequently park on the East Coast Highway after work every day and do a few miles of running and exercising. This day, my friend didn’t feel like running so he stayed back while I was doing my exercises. It so happened that about three minutes later, two ‘trunkers’ stopped immediately behind my vehicle, got out, went to my vehicle, peeped inside and were trying to open the locks.
By this time, I was called back by my friend (I was not very far away, noticing them also). These guys realizing that my friend was looking on and had also placed a call on his cell phone, immediately returned to their green and white bus, registration number (provided) attached to the 47 route, and drove away (thinking that he would move away by the time they return).
Coincidently, a police car with about five policemen was approaching on the main highway. We stopped them and explained the situation (during this time the said bus was approaching again on the highway).
Noticing that we were talking to the police, they then sped away. The police car eventually caught up with them at the corner of David and Alexander Streets, Kitty.
After a search of the vehicle, they were then questioned. The ‘trunkers’ both claimed to myself and the police that they are working for the Ministry of Home Affairs and GPF (to catch ‘trunkers’). When asked for IDs, they claimed that it wasn’t given to them and it’s an undercover job. Secondly, they provided to myself and the police, proof of the vehicle licence slip which shows it belongs to the police force.
They were both then taken to the Kitty Police Station and were booked (apparently seen as no strangers to the police).
My question to the Ministry of Home Affairs and GPF is, “Is this a fact that you have people (not policemen) working in the city to catch trunkers?”
Secondly, why do these men have a bus (47 route) that shows a licence registered to the GPF? Does the GPF have buses working different routes? I would like this matter to be dealt with properly since these men were calling people from higher authorities to speak to the police.
By the whole, thanks for the newly installed cameras around the city since all this can be reviewed.
I am glad to be of assistance to the police if needed. It is time the citizens of this country feel free about leaving their vehicles parked without worrying they will be vandalized.
