How sad it is once again Guyana’s football fraternity has to go into mourning as early
as 2012 we learn of Shawn ‘Fatso’ Bishop’s unexpected and sudden passing.
He played with Kitty Rangers, Santos, beacon, Pele and Alpha: a true master of the game representing Guyana quite well at all levels becoming a very popular and household name.
He was always a team player who got success due to dedication, determination and discipline. A good leader on the field who contributed greatly to all his teams, regularly winning, a talented player for whom going through opponents’ legs was always his favourite dribble, while his powerful free-kicks from anywhere made opposing goalkeepers tremble. He gave his teammates confidence, always playing with tremendous passion, joy and flair. A very coachable player who himself had started on a surely successful future coaching career.
He followed my instructions during training and games as if he had been my very own son.
For example as the Kashif & Shanghai in St. Lucia, 2004 he did this consistently and Omai All Stars easily won.
Shawn ‘Fatso’ Bishop played very outstandingly both in local football and also while abroad since he played a few seasons for two club teams in Barbados and neighbouring Trinidad.
Off the field Shawn was always jovial, making those around him laugh and generally happy with his homourous and cynical remarks, proving beyond a doubt he was definitely witty.
Shawn, I am proud indeed to have been your Coach, Friend and obviously your Mentor, especially as you proved our closeness by choosing me from everyone else to be the Godfather of your one and only child, your charming and very intelligent little daughter, Reshana.
I am proud too of the exemplary way you showed true devotion as a son to Donna, your mother.
Even though I know that for everyone the whistle must blow and the game will be over; Shawn’ it is very hard for me to write this since doing so only means that you have already gone.
So sleep on in eternal peace my friend for you played the game of this life very, very well. Truly the sorrow that your passing brings to so many people, no amount of words can ever tell. (Gordon Brathwaite aka ‘Coachman’)
