Dear Editor,
I refer to your story captioned GGMC Denies Knowledge Of US Based Mining Company in your edition of 7 January 2012.
The story is regrettable as it proceeds on a fundamental error, namely, that North Springs Resource Corp. had represented that it was negotiating with the Government of Guyana to acquire two mining properties consisting of 25,000 acres of land in Guyana.
Had your newspaper taken the trouble to contact the company, it would have learnt that contrary to your story, the company has acquired the mineral rights over these properties through agreements with several private parties (some of whom hold formal title to the area under discussion). Neither had the company ever represented that it was dealing with the Government of Guyana.
The story is either extremely carelessly crafted, or mischievous, as after announcing that the company has stated that it was negotiating with the Government of Guyana, it then stated that the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) or the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment (MNRE)had denied any knowledge of the company or its transactions.
The company takes great care to inform your newspaper, that it has acquired the mineral rights to these properties by agreements with private parties who have themselves concluded underlying agreements with the formal titleholders for the properties; not the Government of Guyana, as is reported by your newspaper.
The company trusts your newspaper would, after ascertaining the facts as related by us are correct, retract its misleading story and publish the retraction (and this letter) with no less prominence than the story.
Harry Lappa,
President, North Springs Resource Corp.
