NORTH SOUND, Antigua, – A tidy performance in the field from Kevon Cooper helped reigning
champions Trinidad & Tobago turn a match that promised much into a one-sided affair, claiming a historic, seven-wicket victory over Guyana in the Caribbean Twenty20 tournament on Friday.
Cooper captured three wickets for 26 runs from four overs and completed two runs outs to earn the Man-of-the-Match award, as Guyana were restricted to a modest 101 for nine from their allocation of 20 overs, after they were sent in to bat in the Group-A match at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground.
West Indies opener Lendl Simmons then gave T&T a brisk start, stroking five fours and one six in the top score of 30 from 17 balls, as the Red Fury coasted to victory over the Guyanese in the regional T20 contest, finishing on 104 for three with 11 balls remaining.
T&T earned four points, moving to eight in the five-team ladder, and second in the group on net run rate behind Windward Islands, who have a match in hand.
Trevon Griffith had made a brisk start for Guyana opening the batting, but was eventually out for 31. Sewnarine Chattergoon made 20 at the top of the order, while Narsingh Deonarine 26 as wickets tumbled in the Guyana innings.
Lendl Simmons 30, Darren Bravo 22 not out and Kieron Pollard 21 not out saw T&T hope with a big six. Dwayne Bravo had made 18.
Meanwhile, the action continues today with two more matches. In the opening Group B fixture: CC&C tackle Sussex from 4:00pm, while in the same Group, Barbados face Jamaica in a big match-up at 8:00pm.
Scores: Guyana 101/9 (20/20 ov); Trinidad & Tobago 104/3 (17.1/20 ov).
Result: Trinidad & Tobago won by 7 wickets (with 17 balls remaining).
Was Jagdeo honest when he made those promises?
