After spending several hours in the operation room at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation
(GPHC), three-year-old Komal Balkaran is still in a critical condition and has been transferred to the Incentive Care Unit (ICU).
Balkaran’s 19-year-old sister, Sita Balkaran, is currently being treated at GPHC’s Female Ward.
On Wednesday, last, the siblings were returning to their Quaker’s Hall, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara home when a privately-owned mini bus swerved from a car, hitting both of them.
The mini bus then overturned, pinning Komal Balkarran to the ground.
Neighbours ran to the accident scene and managed to pull the toddler from under the bus, with his face all bloodied and ‘disfigured’.
Both siblings were rushed to the city’s hospital. Sita was admitted to the Accident and Emergency Unit (A&E), and then transferred to the Female Ward where she was treated. Her brother was immediately taken in the operation room, where he immediately underwent surgery.
The driver of the bus has been arrested.
