The Berbice Chamber of Commerce (BCC) has expressed outrage as it relates to the recent murder of a 66-year-old woman of De Willem of Region Three, and the brutal raping of a 12-year-old girl from Canje, Region Six.
“The Chamber highly condemns these unruly acts and calls for the perpetrators to be slapped with the sternest penalties,” a statement from the BCC said.
The Chamber believes that for too long offenders have been walking freely, and that it is time that the “pace be stepped up”.
The body urged that the Human Services Ministry do all in its powers to ensure that the efforts between them and the police produce results that are “best in the interest of security and protection of our citizenship”.
“The Chamber recognizes that times have changed and humans are losing certain morals and every day the social fabric of our society is being eaten by the type of exposures that are available to our young children via availability and improper control of social networks, television, music videos with partial nudity, improper music and other means. If these situations are not addressed and authorities do not clamp down on ensuring stiff penalties are delivered to crime perpetrators, then we may be creating a ‘monstrous environment’ right under our nose that we will not be able to control over time.”
The body made it clear that more persons should come out and fight against violence as “It is everyone’s business and parents in particular need to pay more and proper care to their children, their activities and their associates.”
