…allege bankruptcy
An estimated 150 workers of Tigerwood Guyana Incorporated are claiming that they are owed $20M in
unpaid salaries. A senior official of the company is uncertain if or when the workers would be paid.
The workers have lodged a complaint with the Ministry of Labour, but say they are being pushed around. The company operates from Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara.
According to several workers, since last July they have been working without pay. The men explained that whenever they confront the company’s senior staff, she would claim that they haven’t received any payments from customers.
One of the employees, Brian Sukhu, explained that they continued working until the Human Resource Manager (HR) called them for a meeting where she told them that the company no longer needs some of the workers but that they can continue working until they are paid. Irshaad Mustapha, a mechanic, is also facing the same problem of non-payment.
He said the workers chose to stay on the job but were later told that they are no longer employed by the company.
After being pushed around for months, a group of the workers then decided to visit the Ministry of Labour. Subsequently, a meeting was held between employees and a Human Resources staff of the company.
Sukhu explained that the Ministry had given the company a time span of 21-30 days to pay off the workers.
“That was since September they promise to pay. When we go to the company, the HR is saying that she didn’t promise to pay us; it was the Ministry who promised,” Sukhu explained.
“Again when we go back to the Ministry they have us back and forth.”
Several efforts to contact the Ministry of Labour for a comment proved futile.
When Kaieteur News contacted the company, the HR manager explained that they indeed promised to pay the workers but they are currently experiencing financial difficulties.
She said that in the next four months, it would be determined whether or not the company continues to operate or would be shut down.
