Residents of Mahdia are calling on the police to carry out a thorough investigation into the shooting of one of their own, businessman Roger Hinds.
Hinds was shot twice during a robbery Tuesday evening while he was sitting in a pickup vehicle on Durban Street, Lodge. Up to late last evening there was no arrest.
Meanwhile, this publication has been overwhelmed with calls from residents of the area who want the matter to be properly investigated. Residents of the mining community said that Hinds is not just any businessman but one who looks out for his entire community.
“This man looks after school children; he looks after parents who can’t send their children to school, if a family has a death and can’t afford to do the burial, Mr. Hinds would help out and it’s sad that someone would want to kill such a person.”
Residents say if Hinds was fatally wounded it would have been a significant blow to the community. “Mr. Hinds looks out for us but there is little we can do for him but the police needs to find who attacked Mr. Hinds.”
Residents suggested that the persons who live in the house where Mr. Hinds was visiting should be questioned since they are of the opinion that the robbery was a set up.
On Tuesday night, Hinds and his son were visiting an aunt when the incident occurred. This publication was told that Hinds was sitting in his vehicle while his son went in to see his aunt. Two armed men went up to the vehicle and shot Hinds before relieving him of a bag containing cash, his jewelry and his handguns.
Hinds was rushed to a city hospital where he was treated and admitted. Investigations are ongoing.
