St. John’s, Antigua (Antigua Observer) – Chief Magistrate Joanne Walsh has ordered that a 17-year-old Guyanese national be deported from Antigua after he was convicted of larceny.
The teenager appeared in St John’s Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to stealing an 8500 Blackberry Curve cellular phone valued $1,086.
According to the prosecution, the virtual complainant, Rohan Rodney, on Thursday, December 22 last year, took his cell phone to A Mobile on High Street to have the battery replaced.
Rodney was instructed to return later that day to get the phone.
However, when he returned to the business place to pick up his phone, it could not be found. He was told by the technician that three phones had been stolen from the establishment and his phone might have been one of them.
A report was made to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and officers made inquiries. Rodney also assisted the police and was able to make contact with the person who purchased the phone via Blackberry messenger.
That person was picked up by the police and he told the lawmen that he bought the cell phone from the teenager.
The Guyanese youth was taken into police custody, arrested and charged.
According to the 17-year-old, he found the phone on the ground in front of The Source Clothing Store.
The young man, who has reportedly lived in Antigua since he was two years old, had been resident in the country without legal status for some time.
