Five people were left homeless after a fire, suspected to be electrical in origin,
destroyed a two storey wood and concrete house at Second Street Betsy ground village East Canje at around 09:00 hrs yesterday.
The building belonged to 44-year-old Waheed Majid, called Terry, who estimated his losses in the millions. The blaze also severely damaged two other neighbouring houses on either side of the destroyed building.
Majid, a cane harvester of the Rose Hall Estate, his wife, Isha Budho, mother, Ester Budhoo, and two of his four children; Ameer, 20, and daughter, 17-year-old daughter Ameena, were the occupants.
Majid’s wife said she and her husband were at the back of the house laying down a carpet when she heard her daughter shouting ‘fire’. When she looked, smoke was billowing from the back room which she and her husband occupy.
They immediately raised an alarm and fled from the house.
“We did not get to save anything,” the woman lamented.
Residents quickly formed a bucket brigade and battled the inferno, some even entered the burning buildings. Using muddy water, residents managed to extinguish and save the two other buildings by the time the Fire tenders arrived.
Majid’s son-in-law, Marvin Kench, lives next door with his wife Fameena, and his two-year-old son. He was at home painting his front step when he heard his in laws shouting for fire. He rushed over to his in-laws, but by that time the fire was out of control.
He returned to his house which had also caught fire.
He has been living there for just 10 months having recently bought the place and done extensive renovation. Many of the items in his house were destroyed.
Maurice Ramesh, whose home was also damaged, had just returned home and was relaxing, when he heard the commotion.
A fire tender from the New Amsterdam Fire station, quickly followed by a Land Rover from the nearby Rose Hall estate responded to the alarm. Residents alleged that the fire fighters were slow to respond, but officials said that they arrived as soon as they received the call.
The victims expressed gratitude to neighbours for their assistance.
Police, GPL and fire officials were continuing their investigations.
