Grove Hi Tec FC played a robust game to dispose of Victoria Kings
FC 3-2 moments before Buxton Stars FC needled BV/Triumph and advanced into the next round when action in the Kashif and Shanghai Football extravaganza continued at the Beterverwagting Community Centre Ground Wednesday evening last. Buxton Stars also qualified for the next round after inflicting a 1-0 defeat over BV/Triumph FC.
Grove Hi Tec benefited from a goal default in the 17th minute, a 25th minute success off the boot of Winston Pompey and a similar strike by Sherlock Dowden in the 65th minute, while Damani Garnett and John Matthews scored in the 41st and 55th minutes for the opposition.
Jamal George breached the BV/Triumph defence in the 57th minute and his success held up right down to the final whistle to hand Buxton victory.
The Grove/Victoria Kings duel commenced at a relatively fast clip with both sides attempting to grab the initiative. A vigilant Pompey latched onto a loose ball and dribbled his way past two of the opposition’s defenders. He was intercepted near the goal mouth and during the ensuing tussle for possession one of the players from Victoria Kings inadvertently drove the ball into his own goal.
It should have been 2-0 shortly afterwards when Pompey was fed a humdinger but with only the ‘keeper’ to contend with, mistimed the ball and drove it along the left side of the goal. Pompey was to feature in several other missed opportunities but he made some amends in the 25th minute when he collected a high offering from the left flank, swiveled on the balls of his feet and slammed in the second goal for his team before Garnett and Matthews raised the hopes of the Victoria Kings boys with their respective contributions. Sherlock Dowden subsequently burst their bubble.
The action continues this evening with a double header at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground where Milerock FC tackle Seawall FC and Caribbean United plays Winners’ Connection. The players then travel to Berbice, at the Blairmont Community Centre Ground on December 25 for a thrilling double header between Caledonia AIA and New Amsterdam United and Millballers against Rosignol United.
Consequently, on Boxing Day, the action returns to Linden with the fixtures to be determined based on winners of several matches.
