Sunday, GTC/PM continued its winning ways in Volleyball in Berbice when they played
unbeaten to cart off the Rick Sakawat Memorial Volleyball Trophy at the Albion Sports Complex Volleyball Court.
Despite not having their star players who were participating in an international competition in Suriname as guest players for Guyana’s #1 Team Achievers, the lads from GTC/PM led by National Coach Levi Nedd and Former National Captain Seon Glasgow brushed aside the challenges from Rollers of New Amsterdam, Falcons of Canje, Albion and Port Mourant Jaguars 1 & 2.
Before the start of the competition one minute’s silence was observed for the late Rick Sakawat, who was an executive member of the PYO, and served as a Berbice Sport Organiser of that Organisation and also as its Secretary.
Brief remarks were delivered by former Region Six Chairman Mr. Rohit Persaud who recounted the life and times of Rick Sakawat also Mr. Reggie Bhagwadin a former President of the Guyana Volleyball Federation and Mr. Davo Girdharry of Miami also made brief remarks.
President of the BVA, Mr. Gregory Rambarran in his remarks welcomed all the teams and representatives of the sponsors and expressed the association’s gratitude for the sponsoring of the competition.
The competition was played in blistering sunshine on a concrete court and at the end of the day – GTC/PM claimed the first prize of a trophy, 6 medals and a volleyball, while PM Jaguars, who placed second, received a trophy and a volleyball, third place winners Rollers of New Amsterdam received a trophy and a volleyball.
Prizes for outstanding performances when to Best Spikier – Seon Glasgow, Best Setter – Jason Seelochan, Best Blocker – Shemroy Ross and Best Server – Levi Nedd all of GTC/PM. A special prize was presented to Kathleen Victor of the Sunshine Girls Team. The prizes were handed over by relatives of the late Rick Sakawat.
An exhibition game featuring the Sunshine Girls team against a four man team which consisted of the Under 12 Players was also played. The Sunshine Girls performed outstandingly as table officials throughout the day.
