Deryck Mundy, (Blind karateka) and member of the Trinidad and Tobago
Karate Federation (TTKF) have made the final three nominees for the Spirit of Sport Awards (SOSA) in the Comeback Performance category.
This event will be hosted by the Ministry of Sports (MOS) and will take place on December 28th at the Hyatt Hotel in Port of Spain.
Mr. Mundy, who won the 2nd place in kata (by .1) at TTKF Regional Championships in Pt. Fortin in January, has an interesting career.
He began karate under Sensei Ralph Smith in Tobago in the seventies. He reached the rank of 1st Kyu (3rd Degree Brown Belt.
After losing his sight he was refused entry to all karate schools because of his challenges. This changed in 2009 when TTKF introduced a karate programme at the Blind School in Santa Cruz, where Mr. Mundy is the principal. His instructor is Sensei Rae Johnson. Mr. Mundy is at present preparing for his black belt under TTKF.
