Two women from Plaisance and a taxi driver are now in police custody after they were caught on security camera shoplifting. They had raided a number of stores in the Rose Hall Town area.
According to Proprietor of Imran and Sons General Store in Rose Hall Town, he was at his other store in the town when his wife told him that their stack of sheets had diminished quickly and that she did not have cash for any.
She decided to check the camera and noticed two women in quick succession taking the sheets and hiding then under their skirts.
The women who wore long skirts would collect the items and hide them under their skirts, exit the stores and deposit the items in a waiting car PNN 4147, a brown Toyota Carina, before returning to pilfer more goods.
Mr Hamid stated that he immediately exited the store and using the description given, saw the two women exiting a store next door with two buckets of soap power which they had just stolen and were entering the getaway car.
He immediately started to shout for shoplifters and thief, attracting the many shoppers and some policemen on duty.
The women were held and then it was realized what was happening. The car was already stacked with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of stolen stocks. The women were held and escorted to the Rose Hall Town Police station. At the same moment the police instead of escorting the car to the station told the man to drive to the station.
He used the opportunity to get away, driving through various streets and taking the police on a hide and seek search and eventually on a speed chase. It took the police and residents over three hours to recapture the vehicle.
The cops had mounted a road block on the No19 straight road and as good as day the driver was nabbed with the carload of items.
The two women confessed to stealing the items and begged the proprietors for mercy stating that they will pay for the stolen things if given a chance.
The driver also admitted his guilt. He told investigators that it is a regular practice for the women and they would always hire him to transport them around.
Mr Hamid who is also the President of the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce commended the police for assisting. He is also calling on his fellow businessmen to be security conscious.
He is asking all business persons to install security cameras and other devices, which should help them to alleviate actions like these.
