DEAR EDITOR,
The Environmental Community Health Organization (ECHO) is calling on all citizens to spare a thought for the environment, during this festive season.
ECHO is calling on corporations and other retail businesses to make real efforts to reduce the usually large amount of materials used to package certain items. In many cases these materials are non-biodegradable, plastic in particular, which are just discarded in the environment. This is done without any consideration of the harmful effects these materials have on the ecosystems.
As yet, Guyana has not been able to properly recycle plastic and other biodegradable materials. As such these pose a very serious problem to the health of the natural environment and residents of local communities.
Also, ECHO is appealing to consumers to be ethical in their purchasing for the holidays. They should pay attention to labels and other instructional materials on items. Those goods, whose production does not complement the sustainable development of the natural environment, should be avoided. Also, goods whose production is harmful to animals and the health of the environment should be avoided. Such products include certain toys and Christmas decorations.
ECHO is reminding citizens that the natural environment remains the basic unit by which all things exist in their present state. Its health is vital to the survival and development of all communities. Spare a thought for the environment.
