Despite the fact that the results in all the matches in the Banks Beer Knockout Cup have gone to script, the mere fact that big ‘fat’ Christmas bonuses are awaiting the teams that make it to the last four, the favourites for tomorrow’s double header will definitely not be taking their opponents for granted.
Scheduled to be staged at the GFC Ground, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) takes on Black Pearl from 18:00 hrs and that will be followed by the featured clash between Riddim Squad and University of Guyana (UG) from 20:00 hrs. With over $6million up for grabs in the competition and the best clubs affiliated to the GFA making the starting grid, fans have so far been treated to a high brand of soccer, especially by the higher quality teams who’ve all ensured that the best players in their respective line-ups are available.
The Army with players such as Delroy Deen, Seon Brewley, Paul Bobb and goalkeeper Rodwell Sandy in their line-up will start as favorites as a Black Pearl team that has been relatively lacklustre all season.
In the other match-up, Riddim Squad has looked good all season, while University of Guyana (UG) under Head Coach and former national full back Earl ‘the Pig’ O’Neal has been on the improve and should not be underestimated.
The Hope brothers Sceyon and Sheldon along with Julian Forris, Orville Stewart and Dorville Stewart are the key players in their squad and all of them have played fairly consistent this season and providing they click everything should be fine for the East Bank Demerara team.
On the other hand, UG returning to the scene after a few seasons absent has gradually picked up rhythm and their performances in the President’s Beer League have left no doubt that they are an emerging force so to right them off early could prove detrimental.
All the teams have much to play for and even though two will certainly advance, the real winners could very well be the fans who will definitely witness some enterprising football.
