A new non- governmental organization was launched last Monday on the West Coast of Berbice. Guyanese Families Unite in Service and Education (GUYFUSE) is a non- profit organization aimed at fostering and facilitating the development of family relationships.
The Canadian High Commissioner, Mr. David Devine and Mrs. Marianne Devine launched the group at Bush Lot.
According to President of the organization, Mrs. Valini Indira Yacoob, the main aim is to educate the poor and needy and eradicate the low self esteem that exists among them.
“It’s not women alone, it is husbands, wives, everything, because when there’s a problem with the family, nobody outside can handle the problem except the people really involved with it”, she stated. Family solving the family’s problems is the key to success, she posited.
Yacoob said that the organization hopes to enable underprivileged women to acquire skills so that they can earn money to supplement their husbands’ income. A three-month sewing class just concluded.
Yacoob, who returned to Guyana a few years ago and wanted to do something for her country noted that her mother was the inspiration behind the formation of GUYFUSE. “She was telling me how she struggled to bring up 12 children. She learnt to sew by watching people. She didn’t have money to go and spend to learn lessons and so on. She used to look at what people were doing. So she learnt to sew by herself”, she stated.
“When poor people are educated, they can be able to help themselves and they can get out of that poverty- type attitude”.
Some future activities of the group she said include feeding 100 less fortunate children on December 23; a dress- making class in February 2012; and a monthly feeding programme for different schools and the elderly.
Comprising mainly youths, GUYFUSE’s executive members include Peace Corps Volunteer, Annie Mills, Yashminie Shamsundar, Sonya Yacoob, Dolly Rambarran, and Moniques Sookram.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
