Dear Sir,
Finally, Guyanese get to see exactly what Mr. Edghill was aiming at- a position as a minister in the government. Maybe that motivated him to drag the name of Jesus the Christ through the political dirt at a particular rally.Perhaps, he should be reminded of the scripture- “What shall it profit a man if he should gain the whole world but lose his soul?”The question is: was it worth it? It is really such a shame.
However, I wish to make two points here.
First, it is unfortunate that this government would want to put an individual (Mr. Edghill) as Junior Minister in the Ministry of Finance without the appropriate background and qualifications.
Surely, there must be others who are amply qualified within the ranks of the government to properly hold such a post. Or is a case of finding jobs for the boys?
Perhaps, it is a reward for his role in attempting to disrupt counting at a polling station during the recently concluded elections in Guyana. However, I could be wrong and Mr. Edghill may wish to publish his qualifications to dispel all doubts about his competencies to hold such a post.
Second, it is clear that, the PPP/C government prefer the dedicated over the educated. Apparently, training, education and qualifications are not prerequisites to hold certain key positions in the government. In the circumstances, mediocrity will be the order of the day.
According to press reports, Mr. Edghill said that he will be paying attention to the award of government contracts. Well, if his behaviour on Election Day and his management of the Ethnic Relations Commission is anything to go by then Guyana is in serious trouble.
It is difficult to see how Mr. Edghill’s appointment would inspire public confidence and trust in not only the Ministry to which he has been appointed but also in the government.
