The lawns of State House will be the venue for today’s swearing-in ceremony of Donald Ramotar as the
seventh Executive President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana. The ceremony is billed for 13:00hrs (1:00pm).
On Thursday, the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) declared that the People’s Progressive Party/Civic had won the presidency following the recently concluded General and Regional Elections.
The announcement was made by the Chief Elections Officer Gocool Boodoo.
The results showed that the PPP/C secured 166,340 or 48.6 percent of the 346,717 votes cast out of a possible 475,496. This gave the party a total of 32 seats in the 65-seat National Assembly.
A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) garnered 139,678 votes or 40.8 percent, guaranteeing the opposition alliance 26 seats, while the Alliance For Change (AFC) managed 35,333 or 10.3 percent, to earn seven seats in the National Assembly.
It is the first time in its 19-year rule that the PPP/C has lost absolute control of the parliament.
