– denies endorsement talks with APNU
The Alliance For Change (AFC), which made significant inroads in especially East Berbice during Monday’s national elections, does not rule out having Moses Nagamootoo as the next Speaker of the National Assembly.
While AFC yesterday denied rumours yesterday it was in talks with the opposition coalition, A Partnership For National Unity (APNU), for a possible endorsement of Nagamootoo, a senior official believed that Nagamootoo may be an ideal candidate for the position.
“Of course, but we will have to get APNU to support us on this. No, we have not started talks with any parties as yet for a possible coalition,” AFC’s Presidential Candidate, Khemraj Ramjattan said last evening.
Nagamootoo, a former Executive Member of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), announced his endorsement of the AFC days before Nomination Day, in early November.
A lawyer by profession, Nagamootoo has long said that he was earmarked for the leadership of the PPP, after Dr. Cheddi Jagan, who led that party back to power in 1992, died. However, that claim was refuted by the PPP.
Nagamootoo has been largely silent in recent years and was not elected back into the party’s senior hierarchy.
In recent months, he was highly critical of the PPP/C administration and finally ended speculations that he was considering leaving the party, when he announced his endorsement of the AFC.
On Nomination Day, he was in the forefront on the rally to City Hall to hand in the list of candidates for the AFC, on which he was included.
He is widely believed to have been the main factor that pushed AFC to secure seven seats- two more than in 2006.
Because of its majority, traditionally it has been the ruling party that would nominate and elect the House Speaker.
But with the PPP/C not holding the Parliamentary majority the decision on a new Speaker may very well rest on cross party talks.
