A woman believed to be a destitute was found dead in the Bedford Manse churchyard, at Camp and North Road, yesterday.
The body, according to sources, had a gaping wound to the head and several stab wounds about the body. She was of mixed race.
Kaieteur News was told that the police were called in shortly after 18:00hrs by neighbours.
At the scene ranks from the crime scene unit, were collecting whatever piece of evidence they could have found.
According to sources the police recovered a pair of slippers found about 30 feet away from the body.
One church member told Kaieteur News that she received a telephone call stating that a body was in the yard and that she needed to come and open the gate.
The woman refused to speculate further on the matter.
This newspaper was told that a neighbour was taken to the station to give a statement after he told the police that he heard a woman screaming about a night ago.
Police sources said that the man said that he was watching cricket when he heard the scream.
The man said that he looked through his window and saw a “tall slim” guy jumping the church fence.
The eyewitness said that he never took it for anything until the body was discovered last night.
Undertakers from the Lyken Funeral Home removed the body. Investigations are continuing.
