A Wakenaam businessman and his family put out a fire in his shop and averted what could have been a catastrophy on Wakenaam Island.
Popular businessman, Nazrudeen Mohamed, known as Baybo of 20 Good Success, Wakenaam Island, said that he secured his business and went upstairs with his family. He said that they watched the Indian soaps on television before retiring to bed about 23:00 hrs.
His wife said that for some unknown reason she was not able to sleep and shortly after midnight she smelled smoke and peeped out of a window.
She said that she saw a red glow which reflected on a nearby building. She woke her husband who after seeing the glow assumed that the neighbour’s house was on fire.
He went downstairs and discovered that the fire was in his own building. He raised an alarm and the family formed a bucket brigade and put out the blaze.
Police were summoned and there was a prompt response. Baybo suspects arson since there were no electrical appliances where the fire took place.
He believes that the arsonist or arsonists took advantage by operating from the area where his truck which was parked outside his house provided a screen for their operation.
He believes that the person(s) threw a lighted object through an opening that is above a wooden door.
In another section of the store, several articles that were left hanging were either on the ground or were removed from their position.
Mr. Mohamed said that he has no problem with anyone and is puzzled why someone would want to hurt him.
Baybo said that he was fortunate that his losses were not excessive.
Had his building gone up in flames the fire would have been of great magnitude as the island does not have a fire fighting equipment.
The police are investigating the matter.
