Dear Editor,
An open question to all Guyanese, irrespective of their ethnicity or racial background and political affiliation, former Prime Minister, Mrs. Margaret Thatcher, was called “the Iron Lady” because of her hard stances or measures.
Question: which of our Heads-of State, both past and present, could rightly be called “the Iron Man?” Because of his hard nature, one which was made of such stern stuff that never allowed him to be softened, bend to blows from local and foreign or international pressure.
This Head of State stood his ground, relative to making hard decisions and unchanged policies for the good of Guyana; he remained as hard as iron because he knows that substance as soft as clay and dough could be shaped easily into many forms as desired whereas iron has to be heated into the required shape.
We have an Iron Lady but who is our Iron Man? One who is able display courage in the gravest situation?
Stoicism or calm in tempestuous times.
I close by using part of Mark Anthony’s ecology- “This was a man” which was our past or present head of state can we deservingly refer to him as “Iron Man”?
George Carrington
