Dear Sir,
Had it not been for the independent dailies, I would not have been aware of the rampant nepotism and cronyism that exist in Guyana. I will cite one example.
Dr. Gansham Singh returned to the country last year and immediately landed a top job at the Georgetown Public Hospital. Dr. Singh is the son of Dr. Nanda Gopaul who is the Permanent Secretary of the Office of the President and who was ( is ) the Chairman of the Board of Directors of that Hospital.
Dr. Singh is the husband of the daughter of Mr. Huckumchand who was the Special Prosecutor for the State in the case against the three Managers of NBS whose Chairman of the Board is no other than Dr. Gopaul.
Quite recently, Dr. Singh mysteriously became a member of the council of the University of Guyana and voted to have the services of certain long standing lecturers terminated. His father was a former council member of the University.
To crown it all, Dr. Singh was awarded a huge plot of land at Pradoville 2.
Guyanese must be careful with whom they interact with especially those persons who hold top positions in the Public Sector. The average Guyanese would not have known the above connection because they do not carry the same surnames.
Ps. B Narain
