US Ambassador pleased with Guyana’s 2011 Electoral process

“The people of Guyana should be proud of themselves for their participation and for what seems to be at this stage a very successful election”   

There were scores of international observers in Guyana for the General and Regional Election and among them was the US Ambassador Brendt Hardt who visited several polling stations and expressed satisfaction at the way the day’s proceedings unfolded despite a few hiccups.
Hardt told this publication that he did get a chance to visit several of the polling stations and, “I thought it was a very orderly well run process.”

He said that it was excellent to see so many of the Guyanese electorate in great numbers.
The US Ambassador said that Guyana seems to have had a very good turnout at the polls.
He expressed a hope that the situation continues to remain peaceful and calm and that Guyanese have had their chance to exercise their franchise.
This being his first election in Guyana, Hardt said that it was a rewarding experience.
“I was expecting a vigorous democratic process and I think that is what I have seen.”
The US Ambassador said, “The people of Guyana should be proud of themselves for their participation and for what seems to be at this stage a very successful election.”
Speaking to the reports of the minor hiccups being reported across the country Hardt told this publication at the time that the process was not over and that it is utmost importance that the electors respect the process and allow the votes to be counted to the end without drawing any conclusions.
He urged the Guyanese electorate to wait and give the process a chance to work and play out peacefully and “maintain equilibrium and respect the process.”
Hardt did assure that the United States is prepared to work with whichever of the parties were to win government and be at the helm of the Guyanese Administration.
