The Ministry of Health’s blood bank is currently in a threatening position as almost all of the units of blood have been exhausted during the past few weeks.
Kaieteur News understands that this severe shortage is due to numerous operations, including open heart surgeries that were recently conducted. Also affecting the supply is the reduction in the number of donors.
Though some have answered the Ministry’s cry during the past week for more donations of blood, much more units are needed since more persons are expected to undergo surgeries in the upcoming weeks.
Families of patients in the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) are being urged to contribute towards this crisis and both regular and new blood donors who are eligible for donation are being urged to come forward and donate at the various Blood Bank sites.
Donors from all blood types are being asked to “come out and help save a life.”
Opening Hours: 08:00 hrs to 18:00 hrs
Blood Bank Sites:
– National Blood Bank- Lamaha Street, Georgetown
– Suddie Hospital, Essequibo (Region Two)
– West Demerara Regional Hospital (Region Three)
– New Amsterdam Hospital, Berbice (Region Six)
– Linden Hospital (Region Ten)
