Host club Net Rockers FC trounced Eagles United 4-1 to win the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA) Under- 15 League which concluded over the weekend.
From the start of the championship game, the host Net Rockers looked the part as they enjoyed better ball possession, it did not come as a surprise when the left footed Shane Lucky found the back of the nets in the 18th minute, the Eagles goalkeeper could not hold on to a shot from the promising flamboyant midfielder Anthony Layne.
But then the race was on for the most goals of the tournament when Layne took the lead with his third of the tournament in the 33rd minute, however, two minutes later, Shane Lucky matched Layne when his left foot blast from just inside the 18 yard area handed him his 3rd of the tournament, by the half way mark, Net Rockers already establishing a solid 3-0 advantage.
As was expected it was solid defending by Troy ‘Bad Boy’ Lewis and Mark McLean aka ‘Twin Towers’ that kept Eagles at bay in the first half, but complacency early in the second half by Lewis, gave up a penalty when skillful Donavon Francis was brought down in the area.
Eagles Captain made no mistake from the spot in the 41st minute, but it was too little too late for the Eagles.
Soon after, Lewis was again on target as he spectacularly found the back of the nets with a free kick taken directly from the half way line to make up for his blunder effectively sealing victory for the host club along with the championship in fine style.
The opening game of the day saw Amelia’s Ward taking the third place after defeating Milerock FC 2-0.
The presentation of prizes will take place at a special ceremony set for Saturday at the Wisburg Ground from 16:00hrs.
The organisers are extending special thanks to sponsors Farfan and Mendez, B. Harry’s Lumber Yard, Snooks Variety Store, Figgies Groceries and Bar, the President and Secretary of the UDFA and all the participating teams for their sterling contributions in making the tournament a reality and resounding success.
The club is of the hope that Corporate Guyana will partner with them to nurture the abounding talent that exists in the Bauxite Mining Town, players who will go on to make Guyana proud.
