Hopetown FC emerged as the champions of the Berbice Zone of this year’s Ministry of Culture Youth & Sports sponsored Inter Block football competition.
Hopetown recorded wins over Ithaca and Calcutta to earn the right to compete against other area champions in the Capital City.
They needled Ithaca compliments of a Teron McDonald second-half goal. A similar result in their encounter against Calcutta aided Hopetown to another nail biting win. This time around, Clifford Garraway was the scorer also in the second half of play.
Calcutta tried for all their worth to pull one back but were not allowed to owing to some solid work in defence led by Norde McDonald.
In the other match, Calcutta inflicted a 6-2 drubbing of a spirited Belladrum/Airy Hall Mixed team. Leading the goal assault was former National Under-16 striker Sherwin Lewis who netted a hat-trick. Theon Sharpe converted twice with the other goal coming off the boot of Orin Fontanelle.
Hopetown will now have to prove their worth when they take on other area winners this Saturday at the GFC Ground in the City.
Meanwhile at the Diamond Community Centre Ground, Grove Back Street edged out Ideal Strikers of Kuru-Kuru 3-2 in the semifinals. Round Da Road of Timehri was a 3-1 winner over Nelson Street of Mocha. The eventual winner got past Round Da Road 1-0 in Sudden death penalty shootout, after both finalists had agreed to that format due to the fading daylight.
In the capitol city, Campbellville’s First Street Warriors led by a double from Jahal Greaves (2nd& 27th) hammered North Kitty 4-0 in the finals at the Campbellville Community Centre Ground.
Rodwell Pellew and Devon Forde 7th and 13th minutes respectively netted the 2 other goals. Losing finalist North Kitty had edged out Bourda Blues 2-1 in a penalty shootout, after a scoreless affair in the first of 2 semifinals and in the other the victors secured a come from behind 3-2 win over Laing Avenue Warriors, who earlier in the day outlasted West Front Road 2-1.
Play in the competition concludes on Saturday, Nov 26, at the GFC ground Bourda.
