Yesterday scores turned up at the Alliance For Change head office where two Books of
Condolence were opened to the public, for the late former Prime Ministerial Candidate, Mrs. Sheila Holder.
Mrs. Holder passed away some time on Sunday evening in the United States after a battle with cancer. Among those who turned up to the Party’s headquarters was Prime Minister Samuel Hinds and other representatives from the other political parties.
AFC Prime Ministerial Candidate, Raphael Trotman, said that the Party was hit by the tragic news while campaigning in Essequibo.
“It is indeed sad and it’s even harder now that we are back home to know that we have lost our sister and friend.” According to Trotman, the leaders of the Party will soon be meeting with other Executives from the Party to discuss the way forward and to decide on what kind of support can be given to Mrs. Holder’s family.
“We are encouraged and consoled by the outpour of sympathies from Guyanese throughout here and abroad…We have received calls from all the political parties, which is a good sign for us even as we approach election…we respect the value and worth of each other”.
He added that in the Party’s mourning they will remember Mrs. Holder’s fighting and indomitable spirit and he urged their supporters to do the same. “We will pray for success and we hope Guyana will be a better place because of her contributions and teachings…She was a sister. We laughed, we cried we had moments of tension and confusion,” Trotman recollected. He added that Mrs. Holder treated him and Mr. Ramjattan as though they were her little brothers.
“She would always look at how we dress; she paid keen attention to what we eat…Some days she would come in the office and would ask if we had eaten already for the day…We related to each other like brother and sister”.
Presidential Candidate Khemraj Ramjattan recalled that working with Mrs. Holder had its great moments as well as sad moments.
“There were moments of happiness and there were times we warred on certain issues but there was always respect that came at the end of it…Her deliberation on matters like the pension scheme was always remarkable.”
“She was the true liberal democrat; she epitomized democracy; she personalized liberalism and I believe that her passing will be a moment of tremendous sadness. But we have to pick up the baton and ensure that we reach the finish line. She would be very proud of us and she would have been the person to say don’t mourn but get the job done”.
Arrangements are being made to have Mrs. Holder’s remains returned to Guyana for burial.
