Guyana’s seasoned road race runners Cleveland Forde and Alika Morgan will carry the country’s hope
of securing top finishes in the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) South American 10km Road Race today.
Forde, who placed second in the first stage of the race in Panama last Sunday, will lead what can be called an impressive field of Guyanese runners in the race that will start at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary at 4pm.
Trinidad and Tobago-based Guyanese runners, Lionel D’Andrade and Kelvin Johnson have been in Guyana all week for the event. Nathaniel Giddings will back up the senior athletes. He will be looking to become the youngest athlete to place among the top three.
Giddings led last year’s race up to the 7km mark before surrendering to Forde. He has had decent results in the distance this year, placing second to Forde at the Ainlim 10km race and third at the Courts 10km race two months ago.
The four athletes along with Dennis Horatio present a formidable opposition for the international invasion of the race. The Brazilians, Trinidadians and other athletes from the Caribbean and what can be called, the South American bloc, will be hard pressed in the race.
Morgan, on the other hand, will most likely carry national pride into the event single-handedly if Euleen Josiah-Tanner does not compete. Up to Kaieteur Sport press time, we could not confirm if the US-based Josiah Tanner had arrived for the competition.
Josiah-Tanner had beaten Morgan at the Courts 10km Road Race and is the current CARICOM 10k champion. Josiah-Tanner and Morgan are expected to represent Guyana among the females along with Guyana Defence Force, Ashanti Scott.
