A farmer from Imbaimadai, Region Seven, yesterday lost one of his arms after he reportedly rode his motorcycle into the propeller of a small plane that was landing at an airstrip there.
Critically injured and at the Georgetown Public Hospital is 46-year-old Winston Francis who had to be air-dashed to the city after the incident.
According to officials, the aircraft involved in the incident is said to belong to Bernard Singh, a private operator in the charter business.
It was unclear what Francis was doing on the airstrip but aviation officials said that from all indications the pilot did not see him while landing the Cessna 206.
The farmer’s entire left hand was missing and he also received severe chops to his head, ear and left leg.
There were no immediate details on the extent of damage to the aircraft and whether there were passengers aboard at the time of landing.
According to Minister of Transport, Robeson Benn, from all indications Francis rode into the plane. It was not immediately clear what he was doing in the area at the time.
The incident was said to have occurred after 16:00 hrs at the Imbaimadai airstrip, Benn said.
Doctors in the area worked to stem the flow of blood, using bandages and splints.
“They requested he be taken out and a plane from Air Services Limited went in to get him out,” the Minister said last evening.
The ASL plane landed at 20:00 hrs at Ogle where a waiting ambulance sped the badly injured Francis to the hospital.
Accompanying Francis was his wife. She too was unable to say what her husband was doing in the area.
Investigations into the incident have been launched by aviation authorities.
This year, there has been an increase in the reported number of small aircraft incidents in the hinterlands with concerns raised by the charter operators over the conditions of a number of them. (Leonard Gildarie)
