With less than two weeks to go before the Guyanese electorates head to the polls serious allegations of extortion are now surfacing and implicate none other than the Mayor of Georgetown Hamilton Green.
The People’s Progressive Party Civic Campaign Spokesperson, Robert Persaud, on Tuesday leveled the accusation against someone he called a prominent individual and said that reports have been made to the police.
While Persaud did not name the individual to whom he was referring this newspaper has been reliably informed that the reference was being made to the City Mayor Hamilton Green.
Persaud told media operatives yesterday during the party’s campaign update that his party was in receipt of complaints from some store owners and vendors that have said that they are being harassed and threatened by the individual (Green).
The City Mayor is reportedly calling persons and telling them that should they not make donations to a certain party then they will find themselves in problems as it relates to their rates and taxes.
Persaud told media operatives that they vehemently condemn such conduct whilst repeating that they know the person and which party the person is soliciting donations for and in the process intimidating them.
“This is nasty, dirty, vulgar, the lowest form of intimidation,” said Persaud.
Persaud said that some of the affected persons have prepared statements and affidavits for the relevant authorities namely, the Guyana Police Force. He added that some of the persons may have even recorded the threats.
“That matter will be pursued by the relevant authorities…You will hear more from the relevant authorities on that particular matter,” said Persaud
He said that threatening persons for fundraising and intimidating persons, “and in a way stirring and causing fear is not how people believe in today’s world.”
The campaign spokesman says that “this is not the type of conduct that we want at this time in our country.”
Extortion is regarded as a criminal offence which occurs when a person unlawfully obtains money, property or services from a person(s), entity, or institution, through coercion.
Extortion is commonly practiced by organized crime groups.
Mayor Green responded that whom the gods wish to destroy they first make mad. He said that he awaits the evidence of the allegations.
