A clinical performance from shooting guard, Stephan Gillis was enough to ensure that Pacesetters cash in on the $1m first place prize Saturday night in the Mackeson Smooth Moves 3-on-3 basketball competition.
Down two points in the first semi-final against Albouystown’s Above the Rim, Gillis shot three consecutive three-pointers, which counts for two points in the 3-on-3 version, to put his team up to secure a place in the final.
Gillis then continued his sublime form in the final against King Street Ballers, who had beaten Linden’s Amelia Ward Jets in the second semi, to win 11-6 before another impressive crowd in the inaugural tournament that represented the biggest purse in the sport.
Above the Rim defeated Jets for third place. Gillis’ team that included the experienced Naylon Loncke, Royston Siland and Travis Burnett lived up to the early predictions that they were the strongest team in the nationwide showpiece.
Siland’s rebounding and inside defence was another factor that helped Pacesetters win on the tarmac of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, which was transformed into an international outdoor basketball venue compliment of Ansa McAl.
The Mackeson 3-on-3 tournament went across Guyana to New Amsterdam, Georgetown, Bartica and Linden. The top three teams in the tournament received lucrative cash incentives for their efforts in the grueling competition.
Marketing Director at Ansa McAl, Troy Cadogan expressed thanks to the hundreds of fans that turnout on game nights across Guyana for supporting the initiative. He said that based on the results of the event, the next installment will be much bigger.
