Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 36 year old man, who was struck down yesterday afternoon by a motorcar, on Wellington Street.
Dead is Rawle Blackman, called ‘Presumptuous’ of East La Penitence and also of James and King Edward Streets Albouystown.
Blackman died shortly after 15:00hrs yesterday at the Georgetown Hospital, about two hours after he was taken there.
There are conflicting reports surrounding the circumstances of his death.
One report from a police source stated that Blackman had snatched a gold chain from a young woman at the junction of main and Quamina Streets and rode into the path of an approaching vehicle in his bid to escape.
Another report suggested that he was trailed by a motorist and after an exchange of words he was struck down.
The driver of the vehicle that struck Blackman down was taken into custody by the police but was subsequently released after giving a statement.
Police sources yesterday told Kaieteur news that Blackman had a checkered background, with multiple ‘run ins’ with the police. However relatives are refuting this claim by investigators.
His father Rudolph Blackman told Kaieteur News that he got a phone call sometime after lunch yesterday.
“Somebody call and say that he was riding his bicycle and he get knock down” the father said.
The man said that persons have told him two different stories one being that his son was riding a bicycle when a container truck struck him down.
The other story is that Blackman said was that he heard his son was riding his bicycle when he rode into the path of a car.
Blackman said that the last time he saw his son was on Saturday.
The dead man’s mother Charmain Blackman said that she received a message shortly after lunch.
“His father came to me and said….Rawle in an accident and he going to the hospital,” the woman said.
She explained that she was preparing to head down to the hospital, when she received another call, saying that her son had died.
Angry relatives yesterday urged the police to properly investigate the incident, since they believe that it was a premeditated act.
