The top seeds in the Men’s Single category all notched up easy wins as play in the Pegasus Tennis Open continued
on Friday evening. Top seed Jeremy Miller lost four games on his way to a straight
set 6-2, 6-2 win in his first round match against Saevion David Longe, while second and third seeds Leyland Leacock and Phillip Squires were also dominant, posting identical 6-1, 6-1 wins over veterans Rudy Grant and Albert Madramootoo respectively.
Miller used his superior groundstrokes to overpower Longe, while Squires provided his usual entertainment with his trick shots and nonchalant play as he defeated the overmatched Madramootoo. Leacock played a smart game to overcome veteran Grant who has proved in the past to be a potentially difficult opponent to get by.
On Thursday evening Sandeep Chand got out of jail against veteran Steve David Longe when he saved 6 match points when down 3-9 in the deciding super tie-breaker. After Chand won the first set 6-4 and was leading 5-4, Longe reeled off three straight games then took a 5-0 lead in the following super tie-break before his momentum was halted as Chand fought back to avoid the upset.
Also posting a good comeback win was junior player Gavin Lewis who reeled off 5 straight games to come back from 4-1 to defeat Gilbert Barckoy 7-6(3) in the first set. He then a 6-3 second set win to advance.
The quarterfinals matchups will see Miller facing Chand, Squires taking on Nicholas Fenty, Leacock against Daniel Lopes and Gavin Lewis against Ronald Murray.
In the lone match played in the Men’s 45 Doubles, top pair Godfrey Lowden/Omar Persaud had a tough battle against Harry Panday/Wayne Alphonso as they battled back and forth before edging out a 7-5 7-6 (3) win
