Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Frank Anthony touted his government’s commitment to sports and more particularly football when he handed over the prizes to 11 football teams from the East and West Coast Demerara following their participation in the first leg of the East Coast Zone 7:15 football competition.
Mr. Anthony pointed out that the tournament broke new grounds and his government is now focusing on community based sports as a means of curtailing the high incidences of chronic non communicable diseases. “The Inter-block initiative fits nicely into our projections and very soon we will introduce basketball and volleyball at a community level into our itinerary,” said Mr. Anthony.
The Minister told the footballers that his ministry will aspire to change the format of the national sports awards by introducing such awards as the best community and schools involved in sports.
He feels that such an initiative would broaden the scope of awards at the national level and provide added incentives for community members to aspire for these goals.
Last Friday afternoon, several teams convened in the boardroom of the MCYS to collect their prizes after their successes at the zone level. Among those collecting prizes were representatives of Kuru Kuru, Pouderoyen, Victoria, Grove, Soesdyke, Timerhi, Mocha Arcadia, Uitvlugt, Ann Grove and Melanie.
The Inter-Block competitions commenced in 2007 as a 5 a-side tournament and have since seen a change of the format where seven players now comprise a team playing over 15 minutes per game.
The teams are now preparing for the grand finals, slated for the GFC Ground on November 25. The winning team carts off $150,000 and a trophy.
